The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Communications Commission presented awards to individuals who have contributed to the advancement of science and ICT, as well as to the national R&amp;D performance evaluation, in celebration of the “2026 Science and ICT Day.”

The awards were presented across three categories: science and technology promotion, national R&amp;D performance evaluation, and information and communications.

Prof.Ho-kyung Kim, Director of the Floating Infrastructure Research Center and a faculty member in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Urban Engineering, was awarded the Science and Technology Order of Merit (Do-Yak Medal) in recognition of his contributions to the development of new material-based multi-purpose offshore floating infrastructure construction technologies.

Title: Challenges for Floating Infrastructure: Proposals for Infrastructure Construction in the Marine Environment

Over the past 40 years, cable-supported bridges have been a central theme in construction. From only three cable-supported bridges in the early 1980s, the number has grown to 87 as of 2025, including 15 currently under construction. Surrounded by the sea on three sides and separated by the Demilitarized Zone to the north, South Korea is effectively an island nation with 3,348 islands. As a result, projects connecting islands to the mainland have been actively pursued, making South Korea the country that has most actively constructed cable-supported bridges worldwide, as illustrated in Figure 1...... We are pleased to share the featured article published in the June 2025 issue of the Journal of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, authored by FLORA, focusing on Constituent Technology 2: Development of Offshore Floating Bridges.

Title: Development of Design, Analysis, and Experimental Technologies for Floating Bridges

1. Introduction: Floating bridges, which support superstructures using floating bodies, can serve as an alternative solution for offshore bridges in regions with deep water and poor seabed conditions. Numerous floating bridges have been constructed in the United States, Europe, and Japan. More recently, Norway announced a plan to construct a floating bridge spanning a fjord approximately 500 m wide, with design currently underway and completion targeted for 2035. Floating bridges consist of superstructures and supporting substructures, which include piers, pontoons, and mooring lines. In the case of floating cable-stayed and suspension bridges, floating pylons are introduced to support the main cables, giving these structures distinctive characteristics compared to conventional offshore bridges. Offshore floating bridges are subjected not only to self-weight, buoyancy, and traffic loads, but also to marine environmental loads such as wind, waves, and currents, whose magnitudes, directions, and periods vary continuously over time. We are pleased to share the featured article published in the June 2025 issue of the Journal of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, authored by FLORA, focusing on Constituent Technology 1: Development of Expandable Modular Floating Structures.

Title: Design Criteria and Structural Development of Expandable Modular Floating Structures

1. Introduction: Due to environmental concerns, excessive construction costs and extended construction periods, as well as civil complaints from local communities, the creation of large-scale reclaimed land at sea has become increasingly difficult. At the same time, demand is growing for offshore space creation using large floating structures to accommodate urban expansion, energy production and storage, and to respond to sea-level rise driven by climate change. Compared to conventional land reclamation methods, floating structures are more environmentally friendly and offer advantages such as flexible land availability based on demand and rapid construction. Since the demonstration of the Mega-Float floating runway project in Japan in 2000, various offshore floating projects have been implemented, including Denmark’s North Sea Energy Island (offshore wind power complex), Saudi Arabia’s OXAGON Project (offshore advanced industrial complex), and the Oceanix Project (floating city development)......
